Veneers are a composite resin or ceramic material thin shells which are bonded to the front of teeth. These procedures rarely require an anesthesia and are increasingly popular as an ideal choice for enhancing the appearance of the front teeth. Dental Veneers are used to mask the discolorations that occur due to age or other factors and also brighten the teeth making your smile aesthetically pleasing.

What are Dental Veneers?

Veneers are extensively being used as an alternative to Dental Crowns. Veneers are a lot more advanced approach to changing the tooth’s color, shape and size. They can mask any kind of injury to the teeth which may have occurred to due outside trauma or dental procedures. They are also used to hide the discolored fillings in front teeth. Patients that have chipped teeth or a gap in their teeth may also consider Dental Veneers.  Generally, dental veneers will be lasting for many years and the technique has shown long life when used properly.

What happens during the procedure?

The entire procedure requires at least three appointments for diagnosis and planning of treatment, preparation and bonding.  It is very important that the patient takes an active role in designing the smile and lets our  dentist understand his/her requirements and objectives. At times, more than one consultation is required to properly draft a treatment plan in order to make sure that our  dentist and the patient are on the same page. Once the plan is drafted, teeth are prepared for the dental veneers. They are slightly buffed in order to allow space for an added thickness of the veneers.  Half a millimeter of the tooth is removed which can require a local anesthetic. Composite Resin Veneers are done within one appointment period but it takes more days for Ceramic Veneers as that requires a mold of the teeth to be taken and sent to the laboratory for the manufacture of the veneers. If during this period, the condition of the teeth is too unsightly, a temporary veneer may be placed at an added cost.

Once the Ceramic Veneers are ready, the dentist places it on the teeth and gets the idea of the fit and shade. When they are resting on the teeth, it is important to pay particular attention to the color because it is possible to change the color tone at this point. Once the Veneers are cemented upon the teeth, the color can no more be altered. Applying the Veneer requires the tooth to be covered with special chemicals in order to create a bond. Once the Veneer and the tooth are sandwiched with special cement in the middle, a light beam is used to harden the cement.

What happens after the treatment?

It takes about a week or two to get used to the new feel or adjustment of teeth. It is important to brush, floss and care for teeth in order to maintain the effects of Veneers.  Veneers is so far the best treatment available to enhance and beautify the smile by hiding the defects in front teeth.
